WILDLIFE FEEDING THE HUNGRY

In the field Hunters will donate venison to feed the hungry...

GREAT BEND - Kansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry, with cooperation from three area processors, will again receive deer donated by local hunters.

The processed venison goes to food banks, soup kitchens and churches that help distribute the meat to needy families.

Sponsored in this area by the Central Prairie Resource Conservation and Development Council, last year the program took in 117 deer that processed into 9,740 pounds of venison. A goal of 10,000 pounds of meat has been set for this year.

The program has contributed a total of 56,000 pounds of fresh meat to families over the past seven years, said Dan Curtis, Central Prairie RC&D project director.

Field-dressed animals can be delivered to Burkhart Meats, Kinsley; Krehbiels, McPherson; or Yoder Meats, Yoder. A $25 processing charge at Yoder Meats is paid by the Reno County RC&D.

Hunters can write off the meat as a donation on their taxes.

The eight-county Central Prairie RC&D covers Barton, Edwards, Ellsworth, McPherson, Pawnee, Reno, Rice and Stafford counties.

For more information, contact Dan Curtis at (620) 792-6224.
